Your Last Resort: Surgery to Stop Snoring

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

Snoring is a nuisance to your partner, but did you know that it can also be the result of many serious health problems? It is not uncommon to snore; however an estimated 59 per cent of adults snore three or more times per week! Snoring can be treated in several ways, but some are more effective than others. Many times, a simple lifestyle change can help to reduce the severity and frequency of snoring. Other times, stop-snoring products can be used to accomplish this. However, if you have tried all of these methods with little or no success, then perhaps it is time to consider another alternative. You might benefit from surgery to stop snoring. There are three main types of surgery to stop snoring: Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP), Radio-Frequency Ablation (Somnoplasty) and Palatal Stiffening (CAPSO). Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) The first type of surgery to stop snoring is Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP). The goal of this surgical procedure is to increase the width of the oropharynx. When UPPP is performed, the uvula and pharyngeal arches are removed, as are part of the soft palette and, on occasion, the tonsils. It is performed under a general anesthetic and is known for the potential to cause long-term complications, such as severe pain after operation, nasopharyngeal regurgitation,

a partial loss of taste, permanent voice changes, and palatal dryness. Short and Sweet: Somnoplasty or Radio-Frequency Ablation Somnoplasty is another type of surgery to stop snoring, and it aims to shrink the redundant tissue of the soft palette and can be performed in a mere 20 minutes.

Decorating Your Dinner Table For Valentines Day

Monday, January 26th, 2009

The most important thing to keep in mind while decorating a dinner table is to create a romantic and cozy feeling. The table setting should be arranged for two people as the day is celebrated as couples. Fill the air with love by decorating an intimate dinner table. To get started, place to chairs in the opposite ends of the table. A card table will be a perfect choice because it is small and the distance between the lovers will be minimal. The person should be able to reach to the other end of the table. Use a smooth and crisp tablecloth that is white or red, you can find it in a linen closet. The main motive behind the cloth is that it should cover the whole table and must touch the floor.

The next thing to do for building a valentine table is to fix the table with the best and finest china dishes. If you don’t have any, then use whatever is available. Mixing the dishes that have matching patterns is a good option. Place some plates on top of the other and make a pair of goblets and wine glass. Use forks, spoon and knives that is silver and those which are matching while decorating the table.

The centerpiece should be very simple and has to be romantic. If you decide to put flowers as centerpiece then use some fresh flowers with long stem and place it in a glass vase which is small and crystal clear. Flowers like rose and carnations with pastel colour are very romantic and are great centerpieces. You can also use a potted plant with flowers; tie a red ribbon around the flower pot. The next step is to find some napkins. Napkins can be of any colour but keep in mind that all the napkins match. The napkins should be folded into thirds and laid on the top of the plates. There are different ways to fold a napkin. Every napkin should be tied up with ribbons and it should form a bow. Under each ribbon a flower can be placed. Buy some rose petals and spread them all over the dining table. This will help in giving a pleasant scent around the table.

A bottle of wine should be placed on the table along with a box of fancy chocolates. Finally light a candle near the centerpiece and play a romantic song.

Controlled Calorie Low Carb Diet

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

Let’s have a look at a controlled calorie low carb diet. Watching calories, and reducing the number of carbs in your eating plan, is one way to watch your weight. For a vegetarian this can be a challenging way to eat. Most of the research that I have read would suggest that this is not a good long-term solution to a healthy eating plan, not even for weight loss purposes. I have observed the same with people that I have worked with. They do not last very long on it or they find that they succumb to carbohydrate cravings.

What we really want to identify here are those that are not serving us and we have to identify those which ones are giving our bodies heaps of nutrition. Bananas have lots and are very good for us, Doritos are not. A low carbohydrate way of eating leaves the body without enough fuel to feel energized and healthy.

Variety is very important in the diet. It is important to reduce the number of simple carbohydrates and increase the complex carbohydrates in our low calorie diet. If our objective is to lose weight, cut out all starches, breads, rice, potatoes, corn, etc and include large quantities of fresh vegetables and fruits.

Try and get your protein from organic, grange fed chicken, eggs, eating fish high in nutrients, like tilapia and North Atlantic salmon. Even better use legumes, lintels and small quantities of nuts and seeds or butters made from them. Sprouted grain breads and roles are good choices. They have great nutritional value, gives you something to bite into that will satisfy those cravings but will provide long lasting satisfaction.

A good controlled calorie low carb diet means eating less junk and making sure that every calorie that we eat has ample nutrition in it. Avoid the so called “empty” calories at all cost!

Good News! Losing weight can be achieved easier than you think. Go to Hendrika’s site Strip All That Fat for more weight loss tips and advice. You can also have a look at her Blog with the same name: Strip All That Fat.

Stop Men Snoring Today

Friday, January 9th, 2009

You probably know at least one person who snores. It could be your partner, parents, grandparents, or even Uncle Ned or Aunt Sophie that snore at various noise levels.

Some laugh and make jokes about it, but it can be a symptom of a serious disorder called obstructive sleep apnea. And if it is obstructive sleep apnea, then it is no laughing matter; that individual needs to get evaluated by a sleep specialist.

what is snoring?

Snoring is a noise produced when an individual breathes (usually produced when inhaling) during sleep, which in turn causes vibration of the soft palate and uvula (that thing that hangs down in the back of the throat).

The word “apnea” means the absence of breathing. Unfortunately, men are hit with more bouts of disruptive snoring than women. Sorry guys, but even if you don’t think you snore, you probably do.

treatment for snoring

The most important point to make about the treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), or Snoring Syndrome, is that effective treatment requires several related problems to be treated simultaneously. At least the following need to be addressed:

Lifestyle factors
The impression is growing that to a large extent, many cases of obstructive sleep apnea and snoring may be related to Western culture. The risk of significant obstructive sleep apnea increases with the numerous factors described below, many of which are problems currently rampant in our society. Correction of OSA generally requires that these factors be eliminated. At times, elimination of these factors completely resolves the problem.

Weight
Excessive weight brought about by a sedentary lifestyle, too many rich foods, or by medically related situations such as thyroid problems, is probably the leading factor contributing to OSA. Bed partners almost invariably make the observation that the larger their snoring spouse becomes, the louder the snoring bellows, and the more often they hear snoring pauses followed by snorts, and a resumption of breathing (i.e., apneas — episodes of obstructed breathing). Conversely, in a large percentage of patients, weight loss down to an ideal weight has reversed the process.

Smoking
Smoking has numerous undesirable effects on the body. Most pertinent to OSA are the obstructions to the airway which cigarette smoking causes: swelling of the mucous membrane in the nose, swelling of the tissue in the throat, and blockage of the small vessels in the lungs. Therefore, add this to another list of reasons why you should stop this nasty habit.

What other factors may be the culprits?

more contributing factors

Alcohol
It is the partial collapse of the airway (breathing tube between nose, mouth and lungs) that is the immediate cause of snoring, and its complete collapse that is the immediate cause of apnea. Alcohol causes too great a relaxation of the airway during sleep. This, and other effects of alcohol on the body, means that it can either cause or greatly contribute to the development of loud snoring and apnea.

Organization of sleep
There are two periods of sleep which, given the right circumstances, are especially vulnerable to the development of unstable breathing. These are Stage 1 sleep, which should only occur when a person is first falling asleep but can occur many times during the night if sleep is poor; and REM sleep, which is the time when dreaming most frequently occurs.

If a person has very unbalanced sleeping habits during the week, it can result in the development of very significant respiratory instability during sleep. It’s that simple: unstable sleeping patterns lead to unstable breathing. Therefore, all you need to do is regulate your sleep by getting at least 7.5 hours of it per night. Sometimes, this is all that is required.

Medical problems
Anything that can lead to a blockage of the nose, throat, or lungs potentially plays a role in the development of OSA.

Pertinent nasal problems include allergies to air-borne particles such as animal dander, and dryness of the nose because of a wood-burning stove. Factors that can block the throat include large tonsils, large adenoids, excessive amounts of fatty tissue, and at times, the enlargement of some of the complex tissue at the back of the throat. In these cases, surgery can help by removing unwanted or excess tissue.

Snoring can also be a symptom of diabetes or hypothyroidism. Therefore, sometimes the best treatment for snoring and apnea is to go to the source of the problem and treat the medical problem itself.

Apple unveils software updates, new laptop

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009

(01-06) 12:59 PST SAN FRANCISCO – There was no Steve Jobs or game-changing gadget at Macworld’s keynote presentation Tuesday, but Apple marketing chief Philip Schiller kept things lively by introducing eye-catching software updates and a supercharged, sleek MacBook Pro.

Schiller, who handles worldwide product marketing and was a last-minute stand-in for Jobs, capped off the Cupertino tech giant’s final year of participation in the expo, which runs through Friday at Moscone Center in San Francisco.

With Apple exiting the Macworld stage and Jobs being treated for a hormonal imbalance, Schiller offered announcements devoid of huge surprises. Rumors of an Apple netbook or large iPod Touch weren’t realized, but Schiller seemed to have a good time talking up the Mac platform and updates to the Apple family.

“I’m so personally excited to be the one delivering Macworld 2009 to you. I’d like to thank everybody for showing up,” he said.

The presentation included updates to the iLife and iWork software suites, a new 17-inch MacBook Pro with an 8-hour battery and a new digital rights management-free iTunes library with tiered pricing.

Starting at $2,799 and available in late January, the new MacBook Pro features Apple’s unibody aluminum enclosure, which other models received this past summer. But the big news was the battery life for the machine, which has a 40-percent larger battery capable of up to eight hours of continuous use.

Apple engineers worked with advanced chemistry, monitoring technology and power distribution to develop a battery able to last over 1,000 charges, a lifespan that is three times the industry standard, Schiller said. The laptop is a svelte .98 inches thick and 6.6 pounds; offers Intel Core 2 Duo processors up to 2.93 GHz, up to 8 GB of RAM, both discrete and integrated graphic chips from Nvidia, 320 GB of hard drive space, and an LED backlit display that has 1920 x 1200 resolution with 78 percent more pixels than its 15-inch sibling.

Schiller showed off new versions of iLife ‘09 and iWork ‘09. The iLife software includes a new iPhoto program with face detection capability that allows users to organize their picture library by - you guessed it - faces. Users also can organize photos by location using geo-tagged pictures. And iPhoto includes a new slide show feature with upgraded effects that can be synced to an iPhone or iPod Touch.

IMovie, which got a major makeover last year, adds more granular touch and powerful features, addressing one complaint of the updated iMovie. Video editors can apply new effects, sync audio better and smooth out jumpy footage using a new video stabilization feature.

Ferrari values succumb to recession

Buyers cautious as prestigious Italian cars struggle to sell at auction.
By Paul Hudson

Desirable Ferraris have usually been considered less vulnerable to the vicissitudes of the world’s financial markets than most other marques, but car collectors kept their hands firmly in their pockets at last weekend’s Bonhams sale of Ferraris and associated memorabilia in Gstaad.

Many of the star lots failed to reach their estimates and were consequently not sold, although most of the more affordable lots found buyers. Even then, they struggled to achieve the lower end of their estimated prices.

The annual ‘Ferrari et les Prestigieuses Italiennes’ auction at Gstaad featured a host of not only desirable but seminal Ferraris for sale, most notably a 1955 121LM Spyder Corsa that competed in the 1955 Le Mans 24 Hours and that year’s Mille Miglia road race in the hands of Phil Hill, Eugenio Castellotti, Umberto Maglioli and Carroll Shelby. It was estimated at £2,808,450 to £3,945,000 but the price for one of the most collectible competition Ferraris to emerge on the open market for many years was apparently too steep as buyers responded to current financial woes with extreme caution.

An immaculate, 192 F40 also failed to sell, as did the 1951 212 Export Spider that came third overall in the 1951 Mille Miglia.

A 1967 275GTB/4, estimated at £717,000 to £836,000, had reached only £595,000 before the hammer fell.

The Ferrari ‘Daytona’ (proper name the 365GTB/4) coupe has been fetching high prices but one of the examples at Gstaad, one of only 530 Series 1 cars and estimated at £232,800 to £268,600, failed to sell.
